Mediumship is the ability to communicate with a living consciousness; most specifically, with those in the afterlife. Despite the physical body dying, the spirit separates from the body and continues on through the survival of the living consciousness [intelligence]. Mediums are able to connect to that consciousness. There are a variety of ways in which mediums connect to those living in the afterlife, and how they connect differs depending on the type of mediumship abilities they [mediums] possess. To understand more about these abilities, we need to examine the types of mediumship available to these unique individuals who communicate with spirits through the subconscious and superconscious mind.
Types of Mediumship:
One type of mediumship is called mental mediumship. Mental mediumship occurs through clairvoyance and channeling. Clairvoyance is the ability to access information through extrasensory perception (ESP) from the past, present and future. Such information covers physical events, objects, people and places, through psychic means, without physical contact or prior knowledge. Clairvoyance encompasses a mixture of the following abilities:
Clairsentience (clear sensing, clear feeling) – The ability to acquire information through psychic sensing or psychic feeling. This includes sensing or feeling spiritual energy, and even spirits themselves.
Clairaudience (clear hearing) - An ability to hear sounds or bits of conversation; internally.
Clairgustance (clear tasting) – An ability to taste a substance, or perceive the origin of a substance, without physical contact.
Clairoldfactance (clear smelling) – An ability to perceive a substance, or access psychic information through smell without physical contact or close proximity.
Claircognizance (Clear knowing) – An ability to know things (through psychic means).
Subjective and Objective Clairvoyance
Clairvoyance includes subjective clairvoyance and objective clairvoyance. Subjective clairvoyance gives a medium the ability to see a person, place or object in their minds. Such visuals can be through quick glimpses, or short “film-like” motions which allows the medium to gain information and give details. Objective clairvoyance gives a medium the ability to see a person, place or object through their physical eyes (a scene before them). Clairvoyants may encompass one or all of the above abilities
There are two types of channeling: mental and physical. Mental channeling occurs when an entity gives a mental medium information (generally through words and emotions), and does not take over any part of the body. It merely is a mind-to-mind exchange.
Physical channeling happens when an entity uses the medium’s voice box, arms or hands. The voice of the medium may change slightly or completely. In most cases, the mind of the medium does not relinquish full control mentally but instead “listens,” and remains aware of what is taking place.
Physical Mediumship – Trance, Transfiguration and Materialization
Physical mediumship includes trance, transfiguration and materialization. Trance mediumship occurs when the medium has gone into a trance by relaxing and allows the spirit to use his or her voice box, arms or hands. The spirit which uses the medium may be (a) the actual spirit (ex: deceased loved one), or (b) a spirit (ex: spirit guide) that brings forth the deceased loved one. The latter remains as itself and delivers either sounds such as voice of another spirit (deceased loved one), or mere messages delivered by the voice of spirit guide, or medium. In either case, ectoplasm may or may not be visibly present.
Ectoplasm is a spiritual energy which is part of an etheric substance combined with a substance from the spirit to the medium. It often appears around the face, mouth and ears. It may, too, appear as a ‘mask’ which gives the appearance of a particular spirit that lays over the medium’s face and upper body.
Transfiguration occurs when the spirit using the medium does so by manipulating the body. One may witness the medium’s face, neck, arms and other body parts change. The body posture may change, too, and assume the appearance of the spirit (ex: spirit guide), or the spirit (deceased loved one) being brought forth. When the medium’s voice box and body are used, the sound of the spirit’s voice and personality often comes through.
Materialization is accomplished through the medium by way of energy and ectoplasm to bring forth a form of the spirit. This is not to be confused with energy overlay (a spirit who uses the energy of one’s body to overlay their image over another person). Materialization is not often seen or recorded; however, there are instances in which the medium has been recorded through photograph, film or through special equipment to prove the existence of a spirit in form.
Those who choose to use their mediumship abilities do so to prove there is an afterlife. A medium is able to provide evidence of the living consciousness (spirit) by giving facts, incidents or history. This becomes important to the one seeking to communicate with their loved ones in spirit as the evidence provided goes beyond a simple, “I love you.”
We are understanding more about mediumship abilities through both mediums and science. Perhaps evidence of the afterlife will become mainstream in our near future. Until then, we can rest assure that our loved ones in spirit have a living consciousness, and are aware of those living on this earthly plane to which they are still connected to.
